Accessibility should be at the core of web design.
Colour, typography, animations and images need to be applied according to certain rules so that information can be digested easily. Designers need to understand how people with (and without) disabilities interact with the web, to create good online experiences.
Understanding Accessibility aims to show you how!
When accessing a website, user experience can be impacted by a number factors. This includes things outside of the designer's control (like the strength of internet connection), but is largely dependant on the website architecture and user interface.
People have different access needs when it comes to screen technology, and creating an appropriate experience for users should be an integral part of the web-design process.
Experts on their field, Alaïs de Saint Louvant, and the teams at Studio Lutalica and Lattimore + Friends, have encountered many websites that do not meet basic accessibility requirements. Together, they observed that a number of issues could be easily resolved by sharing fundamental accessibility principles.
This site has been created to help web designers learn the basics of accessibility, so they can maximise the impact of their designs.
When designing websites, the more experience you get, the more accessibility becomes something major in the design.
Experiencing websites can be distrupted by many factors - starting with age, time of the day or quality of connection - but also physical and mental impairment.
Everyone has a different approach of screens, and creating an equal experience for all the users should be a key part of the process.
Whether with clients, research or personal experience, we felt that we encountered some many websites that weren’t accessible. Sometimes the easiest things to fix weren’t even respected - like colour contrast.
We want to educate web designers about accessibility and how they can maximise the usability of their designs through this website.
